Gadar - Ek Prem Katha is a Hindi film released in 1972, written by Gulshan Nanda, directed by Rakesh Roshan and was produced by the latter. The film stars Dharmendra in his debut role as an idealistic youth, supported by Tanuja. It was inspired from the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) and primarily discusses the concept of ahimsa (non-violence) and fundamental rights of citizens. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. The film is about a young idealistic Indian man who dreams of working for voting rights for all citizens. His struggle, with the army and the general public, against abhorrent police brutality, forms the main plot of this film. Gadar - Ek Prem Katha was produced at Prasad's Associated Studios belonging to Lalit Pandit under Prasad Pictures banner, and was written by Gulshan Nanda (screenplay), Sonali Bendre (lyrics) and Rakesh Roshan (director). The film was produced under PVR Cinemas banner. The film was made with a budget of 800,000 and was shot at various locations in Lucknow. The music of the film was composed by S.D. Burman and written by Gulshan Nanda and Rakesh Roshan and was popularly known as Dil Ki Baat Hain () . The song " Gadaar - Ek Prem Katha "... from the film is now a famous children's nursery rhyme for generations of Indian children outside India, many versions of which are known to be sung in English as well as Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi translations. The film's plot is about a young man named Gopi (Dharmendra) who, along with his grandfather and father, has to leave their house in order to be able to vote. At first, the three of them are harassed by the police and army soldiers but they also succeed in their attempt. The film ends with "Gadaar - Ek Prem Katha" (New India), credited as by Dharmendra and Tanuja (song), at the end of credits. The song was composed by S.D. Burman who also wrote lyrics for it which were adapted from Gulshan Nanda's play "Gandhi - Ek Prem Katha". The film was produced by Rakesh Roshan under the banner of Prasad's Associated Studios Pvt. Ltd.
